Spanish Guitar TABs

Learning to read Spanish guitar tabs is really no different from any other kind of guitar tab. The system remains exactly the same. You have 6 horizonal lines with each representing one of the six strings on a guitar. Then numbers are placed along those lines to represent the fret numbers and where on the guitar neck you should place your fingers. It forms a kind of grid system the great advantage of which is that it nomally takes less than a week to master reading it. It's certainly a lot faster that learning to read traditional music notation and the vast majority of guitarists learn how to read Spanish guitar tabs very early on.

There are however disadvantages to guitar tablature. Firstly while it does do an excellent job of telling you where you to place your fingers along the guitar fretboard and in what order it does a terrible job of accurately telling you about the rhythm and phrasing of the music. This is because guitar tab does not have a system of note value in terms of duration. For this reason Spanish guitar tab books are normally written with the traditional music notation included above. In this way it kind of legitimizes the book and gives you an way of reading the actualy rhythm.

Most guitar players however don't pay any attention to this. The easiest way is to simply listen to the music and once it's in your head you'll find that it's no problem to simply grab the tab book and reproduce it with all the correct phrasing and rhythm. In fact there are many musicians who recommend that you shouldn't use tablature for Spanish guitar very much at all as it actually stunts your musical growth. You see, in times past the great flamenco guitar players would learn much of what they know simply from ear. Without any TAB available there was simply no other choice. This meant that in order to learn how to play you needed to pick things up musically by ear and this would force your musical ear to develop.

Someone who has developed their ear in this way will have a much stronger and more direct connection to guitar. It makes you a more natural and better musician. If you rely too much upon reading TAB as you learn to play Spanish guitar you will never give your ear the chance to grow and develop strongly. I'm not saying that you should never take advantage of all the access we have on guitar tab online for free but just to be aware that the only way to truly develop strongly as a musican is to force your ear to pick up things itself. All musicians find this very hard to do at first but with perseverence it will get easier and the rewards are well worth it.
